Pre-Vacation Stress

Stupid Blogger. Kept eating up my entries....

Well, it happened again. Every time I need to take time off or go on leave, all sorts of problems will start popping up in my projects. I had so many meetings the last few days to iron out all the stupid little things that were urgent. Managed to push out 3 design reports and 1 presentation within this week. Right now taking a break from my 4th design report that my client wants by 1.30pm on Sat. It's now 2.18am into Sat and I'm still working on it. Looks like I'll have to stay up through the night to finish up. On my 3rd cup of black coffee *sigh*.

And on top of that, I caught the flu bug or something a few days back. Medication helped but it made me really drowsy.

Oh dear....so sleepy now.. maybe I should just sleep a bit and work on the rest tomorrow. But what if I can't finish it on time?

Going to be a real busy week

as I need to clear as much work as possible before I go on a 2-week break. Will be flying to US with my family on 29 May. Will be going to Orlando (Disneyland etc), then to Toronto (visiting my uncle) and to NY for a few days and before coming back to Singapore.

I haven't gone for vacation in 4 years. Hubby called me a workaholic. He's got to be kidding! Given a choice, I rather stayed in bed with a book and my ipod. It's just that I've been handling most of my office's projects and I tend to worry about things that might go wrong when I'm not around. You know how things are... a small problem left unresolved will somehow escalate. Anyway looks like I have to lug my laptop along, just in case. I'm not a workaholic. Call me responsible instead!

I've arranged for Gu to look after our car and have also decided on the pet boarding house for my two cats. So what's left is the packing. The kids are so excited about the trip. I did warn them about the long flight. It's a total of 21 hours with two transits, one at Narita Airport and the other in Minnieapolis. Will bring along some VCDs and games so that they won't get too bored on the planes. So I guess a laptop will be good. Plus I could listen in to darth radio too!

I was at home last Sunday listening to darth radio. I left a message on his blog that I was tuned in and he played Summer of '69 for me. It was quite fun! It's cool how this blog stuff brings people together. I've never met darth and may never will because of the vast (physical) distance between us. But that doesn't stop us from being friends. (right? darth?)

Ok. I better get back to work. Lunch break's over!

Stupid Thing I Did .. to my new car

I placed a non-skid mat on my dashboard and placed my old air freshener from the old car over the mat. While driving, there were a couple of times when I had to brake hard to avoid some stupid @#%$ drivers. The air freshener toppled over and some of the fluid spilled onto the mat. I didn't realise it until I shifted the mat and found the mat soaked in the gooey stuff. And when I tried to wipe off the fluid, to my horror, patches of the vinyl came off. The air freshener has melted the vinyl on the dashboard. ARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH my poor car!!!

Damage Control Procedure -
1. Bang head against steering wheel to vent frustration
2. Wash and clean affected area on dashboard with with water and mild detergent
3. Allow affected area to dry thoroughly
4. Buy a larger non-skid mat to cover the affected area

*sniff*

The Dirty New Car

We stay in a housing estate with a public multi-storey carpark... acronymed MSCP. It's a nice neighbourhood but on and off there've been cases of car vandalisms. Not those serious ones like smashing windows, setting cars on fire etc. but scratching cars. It's enough to annoy the hell out of car owners. Even our old Citroen's been scratched. Can't understand why these people do it. Grudge? Envious? Drunks? wtf?

Well. Our new car arrived last Tuesday. My hubby thought it's best to keep the car as low profile as possible. In other word... dirty. That's not too difficult. Just a trip to one of my construction sites and the car would be covered with a layer of mud and dirt. He reckoned that if we appeared not too interested in the looks of our car, those vandals would not find "satisfaction" in scratching our car.

So I'll be driving a dirty new car until we move to our new home in a year's time or until we get our maiden scratch, whichever comes first.

*sigh*

Star Wars Fever

It's back again. All that Star Wars fever and merchandising frenzy. My son, who is 9, loves Star Wars. He has watched Episode I, II, IV to VI countless times and is eagerly waiting for III. Someone mentioned the scenes were quite graphic and may not be suitable for kids. Hmmm... Episode III will be screened on 19 May here instead of the 17 May elsewhere.

Anyway I was surfing and chanced upon this post in TalkingCock.com (a satirical humour website on issues affecting Singapore).

This particular post was titled "Lines from Star Wars that can be Improved by Replacing a Word with 'Pants' ". I'm sure you can see what's coming..

1. I find your lack of pants disturbing.
2. You are unwise to lower your pants.
3. Chewie and me got into a lot of pants more heavily guarded than this.
4. The Force is strong in my pants.
5. I cannot teach him. The boy has no pants.
6. Governer Tarkin. I should have expected to find you holding Vader's pants.
7. I think you just can't bear to let a gorgeous guy like me out of your pants.
8. Your pants, you will not need them.
9. These aren't the pants you're looking for.
10. You came in those pants? You're braver than I thought.
11. Pull up! All pants pull up!
12. I sense the conflict within you. Let go of your pants!
13. Alderaan is peaceful, we have no pants!
14. The pants will be down in moments, sir, you can begin your landing.
15. In his pants you will find a new definition of pain and suffering
16. That blast came from the pants! That thing's operational!
17. Great, Chewie, great. Always thinking with your pants.
18. I've just made a deal that will keep the Empire out of our pants forever.
19. A disturbance in the pants. I have not felt this since near my old master...
20. Lock the door. And hope they don't have pants.
21. Looks like someone's beginning to take an interest in your pants.
22. Jabba, please take these pants as a token of friendship
23. Your pants can deceive you. Don't trust them
24. Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your pants.
25. It's your father's pants. This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight.
26. Look at the size of those pants!
27. You knew my pants?
28. Search your pants, you know it to be true.
29. Yahoo! You're all clear kid. Now let's blow these pants and go home!
30. I've got a bad feeling in my pants about this.

If you are a SW fan, you'll probably recognise who said these (I meant the original version), to whom the lines were spoken to, where and when the lines were said (in the style of my literature tests once upon a time).

New Species of Dinosaur

CLASS95 has got this game called "5 in 9". The DJ will give the caller a category and the caller will have to name 5 items in that category within 9 seconds. The prize is $50 and will snowball to the next round if a caller fail to answer within the timing. I gave up long time ago trying to call in.

Anyway. This morning, during the Morning Express segment.

Flying Dutchman : Glen will give you the category and you have 9 seconds to name us 5 items. Ready?

Glen : Here we go! The category is Dinosaur. Name 5 types of dinosaurs.

Flying Dutchman : And your time starts... Now!

Caller : er... er... (apparently under a lot of stress) one is er.. Durex!

Heh heh heh.... His mind was obviously somewhere else!

Monday Blues

Well. Not really. Actually I was too busy to be blue. I was already at a site meeting at 8.30am this morning . I need to sort out quite a number of things before I go on leave. Yes!! In 20 days' time, I'll be going with my family for a long-overdued-well-deserved-vacation!! 20 days! I'm counting down to it!

Gu has asked me to bring along my laptop so that I could update my blog along the way. I'm not exactly keen to lug an additional 3kg all the way to USA. I remember something about mblog (mobile-blog or something like that). Will try to find out whether I could do that. I have a pocketPC that has a wi-fi. Again I'll need to check if I could use it for overseas-roaming.

Arghh!! I'm so busy now! Bryan is having his school exams this week. Had to do all that last-minute revisions with him. And this weekend we'll have to check out and select a suitable temporary accommodation for our cats while we're away.

Got to go. CSI: Miami is on now.

And it took me so long

1 yr and 4 months to be exact. I've got like 2 PCs, a eMac and a laptop at home but only one PC has access to the internet. I've always wanted to create a wireless network at home so I bought a Netgear ADSL modem + some wireless network cards in Dec 2003. I have no idea where and how to start. In fact I wasn't even sure I bought the correct stuff. So I had a friend to come over to help. No use asking Hubby. He's zero in computers.

Merc came a few weeks later to setup for me but wasn't successful. Said he would make another trip to sort it out. But I knew he was busy preparing for his new house, wedding etc. so didn't really want to bug him too much. Tried it myself but I just couldn't log into the internet. Anyway soon after, I got so busy with family and work, that I had put it aside.

Recently I happened to be chatting with a site engineer and he told me how easy it was. I decided to give it another try. He gave me step-by-step-idiot-proof instructions on the mobile while I fiddled around with the settings. Got a stiff neck after the long period of clamping my mobile between my shoulder and neck. But it was worth it.

Last evening I bought a Airport extreme card, checked the Apple site for instructions, installed the card and within 5 minutes the eMac was setup. It was a breeze with the Mac. Ha! I'm finally wireless!! All computers have access to the internet.
Erm.. now how do I share files?

Blogicide

Not me. But a blogger by the name of bubblemunche. His blog is one of my daily reads. I seldom leave comments, though. I mean, he already has a huge fan base so my lack of comments would not be missed. He didn't leave any clear explanation (not that he has to, of course..).

He had this on his site...
"The reason why I decided to terminate this blog is because the original reason for its creation and existence, is now gone. There is no point for me in continuing blogging anymore."

I hope he's ok as I've grown rather fond of him.

People's President

Dr. Wee Kim Wee, our ex-president, passed away at 5.10am on Monday at the age of 89.

I shook hand with him once, when I was a student in NUS. I couldn't remember which year it was. 1987 I think. But I remember it was during the NUS's Rag & Flag event. It was an annual fund-raising event (part of the freshman's orientation programme) when all the faculties and halls of NUS would decorate floats, fight for the best-decorated float competition and then travel all over the island to raise funds for charities by selling flags.

Dr Wee was our university's guest-of-honour. It was a very hot and humid day and he arrived in the midst of all the chaotic last-minute-adjustments and inter-faculty cheer-fights. Yet he was smiling (a huge contrast to his security guards) and shaking hands with those who were near him. I was one of the lucky few.

Even though I never had the privilege to know him personally, I believe what others had said of him being a kind, unassuming and sincere person. I believe because he had given me that warm and friendly smile, despite me being dirty, sweaty and probably not-too-nice-smelling.

Goodbye Mr. President. We'll miss you.

Peanuts Characters Test

I did this Peanuts Characters Test at okCupid! And here's my results... I'm a

Schroeder
Wishy-Washy: 65%, Mental: 46%, Physical: 50%

A prodigy from his very first appearance, Schroeder idolises Beethoven and spends most of his free time at the keyboard of his piano. He plays backstop for Charlie Brown's baseball team, but his heart belongs to classical music. The best way to get rid of annoying distractions is to yank the piano out from under them.

I like Schroder. But me? a prodigy?
Peanuts is one of my fav. I have some of the comics. But my collection is far from complete. I like all the characters though my fav is Linus.

This test is at The Peanuts Characters Test. I don't think the test is too accurate, but it's fun!
