Ghost Month

The Festival of the Hungry Ghost has started. This falls on the 7th lunar month. It is believe that during this month, the gates of hell are thrown open and the ghosts are free to roam the earth. Food, prayers, incense and 'hell money' are offered to appease these roaming spirits. Performances of Chinese street operas or wayang are held at night to provide "entertainment" for the spirits. At the end of the month, the ghosts will return to hell. So the 7th month is almost like the "Spring Break" equivalent for the ghosts.

This year is rather unusual because there is a leap 7th lunar month meaning there is a double set of 7th month. Generally events such as weddings, business opening ceremonies, moving house, house renovations etc. will not be carried out during this month. It's considered bad luck. So I'm not sure whether the same will be observed for the second month 'cos this could mean a serious drop in business for many.

Yesterday was the first day of the Hungry Ghost Festival and already the walkways and void decks are littered with piles of burnt offerings. Smoke gets in my eyes everywhere I go. Think the air pollution index will be up this month.
