About Old Songs Again

The last time I wrote about old songs I mentioned songs with meaningless lyrics. This time it's about old songs I hate.
No. 1 on my most-hated list... Tell Laura I Love Her by Ray Peterson. This is a song about a boy entering some stock-car race, hoping to win the cash to buy Laura a wedding ring. He, of course, had to crash in a fatal manner, yet he managed to tell Laura I LOOOVVEE HER umpteen times until the medic pulled off his oxygen. I just can't stand it. I get goosebumps everytime I hear that song. It's like he's gonna haunt her... My Love for you will never die.... even though I'm dead ooooo~~. yucks!
No. 2 ... My Ding-a-Ling by Chuck Berry... Sure was hard swimming cross that thing with both hands holding my ding-a-ling... God! I really don't want to hear about how he play with or hold his Ding-a-ling.
No. 3 ... Feelings by Albert Morris.. that Feelings~~ wo~wo~wo feelings~wo~o~o~ feelings make me wanna stuff a sock right into the mouth of whoever's singing it.

F1 Singapore GP

There's only 1 word to describe F1... deafening!
I read about Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Reikkonen and the others.. but I'm not a F1 fan. In fact I was rather annoyed by the traffic jams caused by road closures for the F1 event. I was caught in so many jams at the perimeter of the F1 site over the last few days.
Hubs told me we were invited to this BBQ event at the Marina rooftop Saturday night where we would have a nice view of the race. My response was luke-warm. There's no way we could drive there and the thought of jostling through the huge crowd did not excite me.
I was right about the crowd. We parked our car at Bugis Junction and took the MRT to City Hall. The stretch through City Link was unbelievable! So many people about! Many in the red Ferrari polos & Ts.
The moment we stepped out of the underground shopping centre into Marina Square, we heard it. That unmistakable roar of racer zooming past. That was when I felt the thrill. We quickly made our way to the Marina Square rooftop tennis court where the private event was held.
Forget about the food. Lousy. But the view was good! We could see on-coming cars on one side and the cars making a sharp 90 deg turn at the other side. The cars were travelling very fast and I could see sparks when they braked to negotiate the bend. It was really exciting! And the noise was very very loud. Were given earplugs but those didn't help much. And I couldn't help but remembered Gu. He complained about his friend calling him up just to let him listen to the roar of F1 cars. I sent him a SMS asking whether he wanted to hear that again.. heehee..
I was so glad I brought along my video cam. I'm editing a video clip I took and will upload it to YouTube.

My Poor Ankle

I slipped again this morning. This time in my home. Again I missed the last step and landed heavily on my already-injured ankle. Freakin' painful! Had to lie there on the floor for a while before I even dare to stand up.
I had an important tender presentation this morning. So can't take the day off.
Anyway I can't take time off. Too many people behind my back. I had to put off some work to prepare for the presentation. Now that it's over I need to clear my outstanding work so that I can pass the weekend in peace *sigh*
Already made appointment to see a Chinese sin-sei later this afternoon Better have some 'professionals' to massage it or it's going to haunt me in my old-age.

Excercising

My two friends Sophia & Jean talked me into joining True Yoga with them. So now on top of my regular gym, I have yoga lessons too!
We were given trial pass for the 1st month and we can go for any lessons we want. Sophia is flying back to Australia late October and the 2 have been going for 2~3 sessions each time almost every weekday! They've tried almost everything.. from yoga to pilates to belly dance to fusion dance to sun salutation.. they are crazy!
But I can't! I've got to work! These two are tai-tais, so they have the luxury of time *sniff* Anyway I've reshuffled my schedule to include the yoga sessions. Now my weekly morning schedule starting this week looked something like this,
Tuesday - gym at 8am
Wednesday - yoga at 8.30am with S & J
Thursday - gym at 8am
Friday - bellydance at 8.30am with S & J
Saturday - gym at 9am
Wow! Even I'm impressed with myself! hahaha
The most difficult part is to keep to this schedule coz I have to attend meetings or rush for projects. But I'll try.
Gym on Tuesday was tough. Syafiq made me do like a total of 130 leg raise/crunches. SMSed him a while ago complaining about my aching arms and abs. He replied saying more aches more fun. He's a sadist. Shouldn't have given him the durian ice cream yesterday (which, btw, he and his fiancee liked very much.)
Today's Power yoga was too 'power' for me too. I always thought yoga was just stretching and is fairly relaxing. I've tried basic yoga and it was ok. But today's session was tough. I think I'm going to ache even more tomorrow.

My First A&E Visit

That's me.. a pic of my poor ankle. I was at Esther's place for the ice cream workshop this morning. I had to leave earlier for my drum lesson at 12.30. But in my rush, I missed a step at her front door and landed badly two steps down. Sprained my left ankle. Careless me!
Luckily I'm driving an auto. Else I really don't know how I'm going to get out of the place. It was painful, no doubt. But I wasn't too bothered by the sprain since I was still able to walk.
The pain got worse in the afternoon and there was swelling around the ankle and I could see a patch of bruise formed above the ankle area.
I still made it to Akie's guitar lesson. But by the end of his lesson, the pain was really bad and I could barely walk. I couldn't rest my weight on the left leg.
So after dinner, Hubs took me to the nearby hospital, TTSH. He dropped me off at the A&E and went off to park the car.
This is my first visit to an A&E. Not sure what I was supposed to do. I limped towards the registration counter and was immediately greeted by a staff. They were rather efficient and within minutes I was already outside the X-ray room in a wheelchair. I had no chance even to call Hubs coz telco service was cut off near the X-ray room. Hubs finally located me and was complaining about the security refusing him entrance. He didn't realise he had to go through a temperature scan before he could enter the A&E area.
Well lucky for me. No fracture. Just swelling in the ligament.
I never been on a wheelchair before. And I had a bit of fun maneuvering the thing while waiting to collect my medication. Hmm.. i was given Anerax..that's paracetamol..guess my case wasn't serious enough to warrant something stronger.
It was a bit of a challenge going up the stairs in our home. Told Hubs we definitely have to move out when we grow older. There are just too many steps in the house. Not senior-citizen-friendly or handicapped-friendly at all!

Supernatural Season 4

is back!

Now I can watch the last episode of Season 3.  I hate cliff-hangers so I refuse to watch this episode .. not until I have Season 4's premiere standing by.  S4E01 was aired 18 Sep 08.  So the wait is finally over!

MMS on iPhone

SwirlyMMS 1.2 for iPhone fw 2.1 is out. I downloaded the demo license and tested it. Works well. So my two main complaints of iPhone, which were lack of forwarding in SMS and lack of MMS, are now resolved. And I'm a happy iPhone user! The performance of iPhone after firmware 2.1 is generally improved. So far I had not experienced dropped calls. Reception of 3G signal is more consistent too. Other users reported improved battery life. But I didn't feel it. My phone usage is quite high and a fully-charged battery will last me till about 4pm. My charger is at home and I only have a car charger. Need to get another charger for the office.
Btw the settings for SwirlyMMS for Singtel users are
(under Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network)
APN: e-ideas
Username: 65ideas
Password: 65ideas

(under Swirlymms settings)
MMSC: mms.singtel.com:10021/mmsc
Proxy: 165.021.042.084:8080

Leave the APN settings blanks. Works for me.

My iPhone for now looks like this

I'm using BEZ theme with Apple Backgrounds, Transparent Dock, Black Navigation bar and Glossy Keyboard.

Still waiting for $ingtel

to reply. I called Singtel up to tell them that I have the receipt to show that I did sign up for the BBoM 1000 VAS plan. It was clearly printed there on the piece of paper! I offered to fax it to the lady I spoke to. But she said no need, they should have the record on their side.
Well.. obviously not. else I wouldn't be fuming over the bill I got! duh!
She said they'd check and call me back.
My guess is Singtel has hired a bunch of temp staff for the great iPhone launch over that 22 Aug weekend. The girl who attended to me is quite young and I noticed, wasn't too familiar with the BBoM plans available. Chances were she did not enter the info correctly into the system. I won't blame her. I blame Singtel for not training their staff adequately.
I can't imagine anyone buying an iPhone without signing on a BBoM plan. But the many aunties, uncles & the non-technically-inclined might not be aware that iPhone data usage is forever running. If it doesn't detect WiFi, the BBoM kicks in. If they have a voice plan without any BBoM plan, it becomes Pay-on-Demand, so a 300MB data transfer is gonna cost S$1,200.00!
Back to my situation, I got a call from another lady in the afternoon. She asked me whether I signed up for the BBoM plan over the internet. And for the 3rd time, I told her no... I signed up at the same time I collected my iPhone, at Comcentre, which is where the HQ of $ingtel is!!
She sounded very formal and then went on to say they would refer my case to their whatever department to investigate and will inform me of the outcome and their decision in due course.
I was rather perplexed and asked her why do I even have to wait since I have the printed receipt to show that I did in fact sign up for the plan. I'm not interested who or what went wrong in their computer system whatsoever! They can go do their internal investigation. It's none of my concern. Just waive my bill!
It was then when she sound surprised.
"You mean you have the document?"
"Yes!"
"Could you fax to me?"
"I wanted to this morning! Your staff said not necessary!"
"Oh. Erm.. can you fax to me now?"
*sigh*
I did a search on the internet too see how widespread the billing problem is. Guess what? Optus, a subsidiary of $ingtel in Australia, got the same excessive data charge complaints too!

biteSMS 2.3

It's out and it works! The rest of the apps from Apple store working too! Yea!!!

Why should I even be surprised

that our own dear Singtel screwed up the bills again & again. I don't even want to bring up past grievances. Too long to write..
Just this latest one about my bill after I started using iPhone.
After checking with Anthony, I decided to sign up Broadband on Mobile 1000 as a Value-Added-Service. It's about another S$23 per month which has a 50GB quota. And I'll have peace of mind too since I won't have to monitor my usage. 50GB is much more than what I need since I'm not a very heavy "on-the-move" user and I have WiFi at home & at work.
But I remember there was that Singtel Mobile Broadband dispute in local news last November. A Mr. Zhou YL was asked to pay S$12,000.00 for 3GB excess data usage, which amount was later reduced to S$6000.00 after discount. Subsequently, Singtel introduced a plan to cap to S$299.00 for excess usage.
So I was still rather apprehensive and have been monitoring the data usage of my new toy. As of yesterday, which is about 20 days of usage, my network data transfer is about 11.8MB sent and 352MB received. No sweat! Well within the 50GB quota.
BUT yesterday I received my Singtel bill. It listed,
Broadband on Mobile Data Usage 26 Aug to 08 Sep 08 - 279540kB - S$1255.07
!!!
Becos of the cap, a S$956.07 was discounted. But I still need to pay S$299.00!!! WTF!!!
I called Singtel hotline immediately. Well the hotline must be really hot cos I was on hold for 20 mins and still didn't get to speak with any Singtel staff. I had to rush for a meeting so my colleague helped. She called me later saying that Singtel has no record that I sign up for the Mobile 1000 plan. WTF!!!!
Luckily I didn't throw away my receipt. I have it here! It says 1st month FREE too since there was a promotion. Grrrrhhh... I'm not alone.. quite a number of complaints at HardwareZone.
A warning to all Singtel iPhone Users,
Keep your receipts! You'll need it!

Coolcat's Creamery - New Recipes

So currently I've made
1. Death by Chocolate ice cream
2. Coffee ice cream (with & without liquer)
3. Orange sorbet
4. Hazelnut gelato
5. Hazelnut ice cream
6. Durian ice cream (My family loved this one, so did Fandy. seems like this is my best so far.)
7. Black Seasame ice cream (doesn't look very nice because of the greyish hue but taste good!)

Will be doing these 3 flavors this week. Hopefully I can find the time.
1. Tiramisu ice cream
2. Rum & Raisin ice cream (I love rum so I'll go buy a bottle of dark rum instead of using the rum compound)
3. Tom-Yam sorbet (I tried this at Hui Leng's. The contrast between the hotness of the Tom-Yam and the iciness of the sorbet was amazing! I love it! I got to try making this myself.)

I'm going for another ice cream workshop this weekend. It's gonna be a Wine & Liquor theme. Recipes we'll be learning are
1. Fruity Chardonnay sorbet,
2. Merlot ice spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg & clove
3. Orange liquor ice cream with choco swirl
4. Ice wine ice cream
5. Dark chocolate milo ice cream with Bailey's
Hmm.. don't think I should be driving after the workshop. heehee

Jailbreaked!

I did it! I pwned my iPhone!
Anthony sms-ed me early this morning.. Pwnage & Quickpwn for Mac is out at Sleepers.net! His advice was to use Quickpwn which is the easier of the 2. (actually his exact words were "Pwnage would be too difficult for" me.. heehee)
Anyway I downloaded both. Also downloaded a backup of iPhone 2.1 firmware, just in case. Quickpwn was easy. It did everythingfor me. Becareful though. There's a prompt asking whether you want to replace logo etc.. press No or else you'll see a Pineapple logo instead of Apple logo when you startup your iPhone. Had to re-pwn mine to restore the Apple logo.
I had a little boo-boo.. there's one part where i need to turn on & off the iPhone. It goes something like this.
Power down -> (screen countdown to 5 sec) press Home & Power at the same time. Hold for 10 secs with the help of the screen countdown -> at the 10th sec, release Power button only and continue to hold Home button for another 10 sec.
What I did what was released both Home & Power and then press Home again. Wrong. Took me 3~4 tries before I released what I did wrong. hehee.. too early on a Sunday morning.. my mind still half asleep lah.
Once successfully pwned, Cydia and Installer icons appeared on the iPhone. From what I've read. Cydia is more stable. I tried to install some of the apps such as biteSMS, Winterboard etc but I kept getting a "source not found" error. And then 1/2 hr later, suddenly I could install them. Guess Cydia was still being updated.
The 1st app I installed was biteSMS. It looked very much like the original iPhone's SMS but with the forwarding capability. Just sweep your finger across the message you want to forward and the option to forward or delete will appear.
But then after installing biteSMS, I realised all the apps I downloaded from AppStore couldn't run. Found out there is still some incompatibility between biteSMS & firmware 2.1. So no choice, had to uninstall it first and hope for an update soon. The developer did say most likely they'll fix the bug by end of Monday, which is tomorrow local time. Looking forward to it.
The apps available through Cydia are fantastic! I can now customise the look of my iPhone through Winterboard themes. Can also do video-recording using Cycorder and download Youtube videos into the phone using MxTube. I'm only brushing the tip of the ice-berg here.

iTunes 8

Still waiting for iPhone 2.1. But installed iTunes 8 last night since the update of iPhone 2.1 will be done through iTunes 8, or so I've read.
Anyway Apple promised a whole new experience of browsing music. Well.. i wouldn't call browsing via album artwork new and on top of that, Genius playlist is not available for Sg users. So not much difference between iTunes 7 and 8 where I'm concerned.
But there's this silly thing in iTunes 8 that irks me. If the songs are imported from the same CD, with the same artist and the same album title, then it's only logical they belong to the same album. So I'm rather annoyed to see 12 out of 13 songs represented by 1 album icon and and one lone song from the CD represented by another same album icon. Happened to a number of my albums. Was too tired last night to find out why. Will check again tonight.
Been using the iPhone for the last 2 weeks. Getting used to it. It's not too bad after a while. Found some useful and fun apps too. I like the bubble-sms although the lack of forwarding & multiple recipient still irritates me. Why Apple? Why?
I'm waiting for the dev team to come out with the update Pwnage for iPhone 2.1. I'm jailbreaking it just so I can use biteSMS.

Stung by a Dead Bee #2

Last week I stepped on a dead bee. I was very sure I pulled out the sting. But for the last few days, after the swelling & pain subsided, the local area began to itch.. very very badly too. It wasn't a continuous itch. But when it started, OMG! I felt like I could scratch a hole into my sole. Happened a few times while I was driving and I couldn't scratch it at all.
I thought there might be remnants of the sting left behind in the wound which caused the itch. So last night I went to see a doctor. He cut the skin and created a larger wound in order to check. But found nothing. Got some medication for it. So far so good. no itch. yet. stupid bee.

Odds & Ends

Finally things quiet down somewhat at the office. Managed to clear some of the backlogs. Was able to take a few hours off last Friday to watch WALL.E with my family. Re-started my gym schedule. I even have the luxury of time to have breakfasts with Gabriel after my gym sessions. Wat a relief!
Saturday, as usual, spent almost the whole day at United Sq. Had a jamming session with Firuz and 2 boys. But there no singer and no 1st guitar playing, so I had some difficulty. Keep losing my count after a while. heehee.. sorry lah.. still green lah! Drum exam is in November. That's less than 2 months. So I better start practising for it.
Had dinner at Youtei Sushi Restuarant. The one at United Sq. closed down and the staff was reassigned to the outlets at Marina Sq and Forum Galleria. Rachel & I were such regulars at the old United Sq outlet that we became friends with the waitresses and managers. So it was not just dinner but also to visit them too.
And after dinner, I went to Vino Vino to meet D. She & Akie bought me a bag. So sweet of them! Had a nice time chatting with D. Akie wasn't feeling too good, might have caught a chill. According to him carrying a brolly wouldn't look cool. Luth didn't look too well either.  Said he slept only 3 hours the night before.  But they still had to continue entertaining the patrons. Poor chaps.  Noticed Rafi, Zul and Ros yawning away earlier on too.  This was their 1st week of fasting so i guess they're still adjusting to it.
On Sunday I made orange sorbet. It was quite easy .. 300ml of freshly hand-squeezed orange juice, 30~40g of sugar depending on sweetness of the orange, 15g of Granfruttosa, and 1 tbsp orange zest. That's it! Simple yet delightful! I could use a juicer for the orange but I choose to hand-squeeze them cos the fibrous part will leave a bit of bitterness.  Rachel, the family fussbudget, loved it.
I was quite tired the rest of Sunday since I slept at 2 am. But I still had 3 baby showers to attend. Gu's, Anthony's and Leon's. Jeff passed me a gift for Leon and I almost gave it to Anthony by mistake.  I saw Anthony's iPhone.  He 'jailbroke' it and it looked totally cool!  I'm so tempted to try it myself.  Gotten the websites from him.  But I'm waiting for the release of iPhone 2.1.  Supposed to be today together with iTunes 8.  Let's see what improvements have been made.. and then I'll jailbreak my iPhone too!

Coolcat's Creamery - The Day After

All 3 ice cream flavors turned out quite good. Left them overnight in the freezer and this morning they were firm, not hard. Hmm.. not bad for a 1st-timer. heehee. But I need to make some adjustments to the recipes.
1. Coffee Tia Maria - Coffee strength is ok for me but may be a bit strong for others. So gotta cut back a bit so instead of 2 tbsp I'll use 1.5. I want to cut back sugar too. So perhaps 50~55g instead of 65g.
2. Death by Chocolate - I used 73% cocoa Courverture chocolate. Leftover from all the chocolate fondues. Hubs thinks chocolate's too strong. I thought it was just right. But again lesser sugar would probably be better. The orange zest added so much to the flavors! Love it!
3. Hazelnut Gelato - Again too sweet for my liking.
I'm bringing this batch to my mom's place. Need some feedback from rest of family before I try again. I still have enough cream and milk left to make another 3 batches.
Syafiq already reserved my 2nd batch! heehee

Coolcat's Creamery

where everyday is a Sundae..  heehee ..

I made my very 1st ice cream 15 minutes ago.. and I love it!!  In fact the 2nd batch is churning now and the 3rd is aging in the fridge.
I was introduced to this homemade ice cream thing by my neighbor.  Met this lady Esther who teaches ice-cream making at her place and also sells the ice cream machines.  She carries 2 types of machines, Venetto Junior (S$88) and Venetto Pro (S$600).  According to my neighbor Ling, she got the Junior at 1st but within a week, she exchanged for the Pro version.
Pro version has a built-in compressor, so you can continuously churn out ice cream, batch after batch. Whereas for the Jr  version, the bowl has to be placed in the freezer to allow the coolant to freeze.  So you can only make perhaps the most 2 batches and you'll have to throw the bowl back into the freezer to cool it down again.  But the main advantage of getting the Pro is because it handles liquor ice cream very well.  Adding liquor to the mixture will lower the melting point, hence the Jr will not be able to keep the mixture cold enough to form firm ice cream.
Since I'm rather fond of liquor ice cream, no need to guess which one I bought.
I'm making up for lost time and decided to make 3 types of ice cream at one go.

* * *

My 1st ice cream : Death by Chocolate

  • Recipe :
    • 1 egg
      65g sugar
      120g milk
      110g cream
      70g dark chocolate (Couverture)
      Orange zest (IMO.. a must!)

  • Method :
    • 1. Whisk egg & sugar until thickened
      2. Melt chocolate in double boiler
      3. Add in milk, a little at a time, stirring continuously
      4. Add cream, egg mixture to the chocolate and heat until mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon (about 7~10 mins)
      5. Plunge hot mixture into an ice bath
      6. Put mixture into the fridge for at least 2 hours
      7. Churn chilled mixure in ice cream maker until soft ice cream is formed (~20 mins)
      8. Freeze ice cream until firmly set (2~4 hours)

    * * *

My 2nd ice cream : Coffee Tia Maria

  • Recipe :
    • 1 egg
      65g sugar
      120g milk
      230g cream
2 tbsp instant Expresso coffee powder
2 tbsp Tia Maria (can replace with Coffee Kahlua or Bailey's Irish Cream)

  • Method :
    • 1. Whisk egg & sugar until thickened
      2. Add cream & milk and simmer over double boiler
      3. Heat until mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon
      4. Plunge mixture into a ice bath
      5. Put mixture into fridge for 1~2 hours
      6. Dissolve coffee powder in a little hot water
      7. Mix in Tia Maria
      8. Stir cooled coffee mixture into chilled custard
      9. Churn chilled mixure in ice cream maker until soft ice cream is formed (~25 mins)
      19. Freeze ice cream until firmly set (4 hours or overnight)

    * * *

My 3rd ice cream : Hazelnut Crunch Gelato

  • Recipe :
    • 34g sugar
      150g milk
      50g cream
      16g TotalBase
      34g Hazelnut paste
Ferrero Rocher chocolate cut into small pieces

  • Method :
    • 1. Whisk milk, cream, sugar and Totalbase until well dissolved
      2. Smoothen the Hazelnut paste till it becomes a smooth consistency
      3. Add milk mixture, a little at a time, to the paste until well combined
      4. Put mixture into fridge for at least 1 hour
      5. Churn chilled mixure in ice cream maker until soft ice cream is formed (~20 mins)
      6. Add in chocolate bits and churn for another 5 mins
      7. Freeze gelato until firmly set (4 ~ 5 hrs)

    * * *

Recipes were provided by Esther.  And I like all of them.  And the thing about homemade ice cream is you have full control over the ingredients.  You can use fresh or organic stuff.  Up to you.  And the ingredients per pint of ice cream is actually quite low.  It's quite easy too.  I love licking all the bits of ice cream off the churn blade.  I'm like a cat in cream heaven!!
Looking forward to her next workshop.. will be learning Rum & Raisin and Tiramisu.  Yum!

    iPhone after 5 days

I was finally able to download the iPhone applications! Earlier I kept getting an error message that said I could only download applications from S'pore's iTunes store. But I did register at the S'pore iTunes store and my address, phones everything are Singapore based. So I ought to be able to download. But I just couldn't!

I tried calling Singtel's iPhone hotline 1626.. must be really hot.. coz it took me almost 10 mins before I finally get to talk to an operator. But she wasn't able to help and kept putting me on hold while she consulted her colleagues. Finally I still couldn't solve it.

It was Anthony who suggested I download using the computer from iTunes first, then sync to the iPhone. I tried it last night and it worked! Finally!

So after sync-ing the iPhone, I'm now able to download directly using the iPhone. Weird. As long as it works.

So last night I was busy downloading and I found this very interesting application "Midomi". It's a music search utility with 4 ways of searching. Sing, Say, Grab or Type. With Sing, you just have to hum a few bars and it actually find the song together with links to iTunes & YouTube. I tested it. Sang a bit of I'm Yours, and it recognised the song! No more wondering what song was that on the radio. Use Grab, hold the iPhone to the radio and it identifies the song! Had so much fun with it.

    Stung by a Dead Bee

    WTF!
Went into the shower this morning, barefoot, and of all places to step, I had to step right onto a belly-up dead bee.
    Hurts like @&*#!
I managed to pull the stinger out completely. Spent the next hour limping around. grrrrhh...
The pain was quite bad and got me worried for a while. But it subsided 1/2 hr later. So guess I'm not allergic to bee-sting.

p.s. now I have this circular bruise where the sting was... itching like crazy..
